Analysis of a Section of Film
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOGug3SXWDY
The section of film which I have chosen to study is from the film ‘I Am Legend’, the film is based on a futuristic New York, where some sort of virus has broken out and causes people to mutate once they have been infected. The main character is played by Will Smith, he plays a military professor he created what he thought was the cure to cancer, but this is what caused the outbreak of the mutations, so his goal in the film is to create a cure to stop his mistake. The genre of the film is sci-fi/horror, it has a hybrid genre.
The second of the film I am going to analyse is close towards the end of the film, it is the scene of the dog dying. Here, Will Smith’s character shows a real depth of emotion and you can see clearly how he is portraying the characters feelings and emotions. We can see this through the facial expressions of the character, the use of the expressions makes the emotions seem more realistic and believable for the audience, this affects the audience as it allows them to feel what he feels as throughout the film you become more attached to the characters due to the acting of Will Smith. The character shows real affection to the dog, you can see the change in his facial expressions as the dog starts to mutate, and you see the sadness in the characters face as he knows he has to kill the dog to protect himself.
The room this is set in is quite dark, with low key lighting, and the props used in the set are all mainly medical related, so we know that the character is either somewhere in a hospital or a laboratory, from watching the film I know this is his laboratory.
There is no noise in the scene of the death of the dog, the effect this has shows how dramatic and shocking this scene is in the film. Also, Will Smith does not speak much during this section either, this further emphasises his sadness for the death of his dog and only speaks when he is trying to comfort the dog. However, the dog does make noises, the noises show that it is in pain, this further affects the audience as this would not be a pleasant thing to hear, so this again creates a larger sense of realism and makes it more believable.
